The Everlasting-ness of God

Today at church, we sang a song that has this line in it:

“Everlasting, Your light will shine when all else fails
Neverending, Your glory goes beyond all fame.”
-Quoted from the song “From the Inside out”
written by Joel Houston, 2005 Hillsong Publishing

It wasn’t the first time we sang it, and it was definitely not the first song I’ve ever sang that deals with the “everlasting-ness” of God, yet it struck me today.  And then, just a few moments ago, I was reading from a book entitled “The Knowledge of the Holy” by A.W. Tozer, and the chapter I happened to start tonight is called “The Eternity of God.”  I thought, “Huh…ironic?”  Hardly.
It’s an idea that all Christians profess, the everlasting nature of God.  Yet, on any given day, have you ever really thought about what that means?  Have you ever pondered what it means for God to be “from everlasting to everlasting” (Psalm 90:2)?  Honestly, I can’t say that I ever really have.  I mean, can ANY of us comprehend the infiniteness of God, really and truthfully?  No.  It is a mystery that is beyond the imagining of our tiny minds.
However, that does not mean that we shouldn’t think OF God’s everlasting nature.  Think about this Scripture from Isaiah”
“For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure.”  (Is. 46:9-10)
He knows the end of time from the very beginning of time because He is beyond time.
Wow.
That
Is
An
Awesome
God!
Before anything was, HE IS!
“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible.”  Col. 1:16
He made it all, and He knows how it will all play out in the end.  From the history of mankind to the minute details of our seemingly insignificant lives.  From the dawning of Creation to the rolling back of the skies at the end of time, He knows it, and has always known it.
Nothing surprises Him.  Nothing catches Him off guard.
He is in control.  Now and forever.
God is BIG, people.  Bigger than most of us give Him credit for.  He created everything around us by simply speaking it into being.  Have you tried that lately?  He can handle whatever details our lives may hold.  We just have to recognize that He’s God, and we’re not.
He is everlasting.  He is before all else was, and He’s there at the end.  And the crazy thought is this:  He’s there now, yet He’s here now.
Wow.
I stand in awe of a magnificent, omniscient, omnipotent Creator…and the only that is fitting is praise:
“From everlasting to everlasting, You are God!”
