You Are What You Eat…errrr…Worship

idolatry

If you’ve been around the Perch for a while, you know that the topics of worship and idolatry come up quite often.  Reaso

ing, we’re all worshippers, each and every one of us.  We either worship rightly (by worshipping the God Who created us), or wrongly (anything else).

One of the aspects of worship that is HUGE to realize is this:  we are what we worship.  Read this:

“Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands.   They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see.  They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell.  They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat.  Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them.”  (Psalm 115: 4-8, text from the ESV)

Read that last line again:  “Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them.”  What does that mean?

Well, the previous verses tell us:  mouths that can’t speak; eyes that can’t see ; ears that can’t hear; hands that can’t feel, feet that won’t move.  We become useless.  We become stone-like, wood-like.  When we worship anything other than the one True God, we become useless.

Take, for example, the camera lens sitting on my desk right now.   It looks great!  Black and shiny, with cool little marks and switches on it.  Looking at it, you’d think it would take amazing pictures.  However, if you try to use it, you’ll realize it’s worthless for what it was made to do.  The inside works have completely messed up, leaving it unable to focus.  It looks fine, but it’s useless.

That’s me when I worship anything other than God.  And folks, as Mark Driscoll pointed out recently, even good things can become bad things when they take the place of honor in our lives.

Even family.  Even jobs.  Even sports. Even hobbies. Even iPhones.

Definitely iPhones.

So worship the One Who created you.  Other wise, heed the warning:  you will become worthless.

  1. Gosh Matt, if I didn’t know better I would say you were writing a sermon.
Very well written and you made some good points.
    Great illustrations!

    • Ha! You know, sometimes I wonder what I’m doing, because I feel like I ramble and seldom make the point I set out to make. Thanks bro.
